ABOUT THIS TOOL

What is a public IP address?

Your public IP address is the address your internet connection presents to services on the internet. Websites and online services can use it to communicate back with your connection.

This tool retrieves your public IP through a third-party IP lookup endpoint. Your IP is displayed in your browser and is not stored by Layer Eight Tools.

IPv4 and IPv6

You may see either an IPv4 address such as 203.0.113.10 or an IPv6 address such as 2001:db8::1, depending on how your connection reaches the internet.

FAQ

Common questions

Does Layer Eight Tools store my IP?

No. This page displays the value returned to your browser and does not send it to Layer Eight IT's own server.

Why can my IP change?

Many internet providers use dynamic addressing. Your public IP can change when your connection reconnects or when your provider changes its allocation.

Is a public IP the same as my device's local IP?

No. A local address is used inside your home or office network. Your public IP is the address visible to internet services.
